Scott Nelson graduated from Jacksonville University with a bachelor's degree in business administration and later attended Rutgers University and Long Island University, where he received a master's degree in criminal justice. He served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Presidential Unit Citation for combat action.
Mr. Nelson was appointed a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1970 and held a variety of critical investigative, tactical, and senior leadership positions across the country. He retired as a deputy assistant director/inspector after nearly twenty-six years of service, having received the FBI Star for valor and numerous other honors and commendations.
After retiring from the FBI, Mr. Nelson served as vice president of security for Warner Bros. Studios (in charge of the security, fire, emergency services, investigative, and medical services departments) and the senior security executive for Time Warner Inc., where he was responsible for global, multinational security operations for the largest entertainment company in the world. Senior management at Time Warner Inc. commended Nelson for effectively leading the September 11 corporate response team in New York City.
Mr. Nelson founded SRMG in 2002. In addition to serving as its president, he is currently an adjunct professor at the School of Business & Technology (SBT) at Webster University, teaching graduate classes in organizational behavior and management; psychosocial criminal behavior; ethics; protective security law; business asset protection; and criminal policy, practices, and procedures. He is active in the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Inc.; the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); the Overseas Advisory Council (OSAC); InfraGard; the FBI National Academy Associates (FBINAA); the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS International); the First Marine Division Association; and the First Battalion, Fifth Marines (1/5) Association.
Mr. Nelson lectures widely on leadership, urban conflict, and criminal justice, speaking to prominent groups such as RAND Corporation, The Conference Board Inc., the USMC, the National Executive Institute (NEI), the FEI, and InfraGard. He often provides expert commentary in the media regarding urban conflict, crime, and terrorism, most recently appearing on CNN and KGIL “LA’s News/Talk” 1260/540 AM. He has published numerous articles and white papers, including “Policing in the 21st Century through the Internet”; participated in criminal justice webinars; and coproduced/narrated two popular audiovisual presentations in the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Inc.’s The FBI: Legacy and Legends series.
